Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide Detectors Protect You While Your Sleeping

Without proper protection carbon monoxide can kill you before you have a chance to react. Known as the silent killer, carbon monoxide can easily happen in your home. It is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas. Carbon monoxide is produced when fossil fuels burn incompletely.

Some fossil fuels in your home which can cause carbon monoxide include gasoline, wood, coal, propane, oil and methane. Heating and cooking equipment are the most likely sources of carbon monoxide gases. Dangerous levels of carbon monoxide can also be produced by vehicle running in an attached garage. However, there is a way to protect you're self against carbon monoxide poisoning.

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Exposure

If carbon monoxide builds up in your home you will experience symptoms that you may not associate with carbon monoxide poisoning. Some common symptoms you may experience include confusion, blurred vision, fatigue, light headedness, vomiting, nausea, headaches and then unconsciousness followed by death. Children, elderly individuals, pregnant women and those with respiratory issues are even more sensitive to carbon monoxide so they will be affected quicker than healthy individuals.

How to Protect Yourself

The best way to get early warning against carbon monoxide exposure is with a properly working carbon monoxide detector. This can alert you to a buildup of gas before the level become lethal. This is especially important since you wouldn't even be aware of the gas when you are sleeping without the alarm alerting you. Within just a few minutes levels can become lethal and advanced warning is the only way to ensure you can get out alive.

Why Get a Carbon Monoxide Detector?

Carbon monoxide can be released into your home in a variety of ways. If you aren't killed by the gases you can still experience damage to your lungs. Some items in your home that can cause carbon monoxide poisoning include fireplaces, heaters, hot water heaters, gas stoves, ovens, automobiles, grills, dryers and even nearby traffic. This is why it is important to have a carbon monoxide detector since you never know when any of your common household appliances is emitting toxic levels of carbon monoxide.

Types of Carbon Monoxide Detectors

First there is metal oxide semi-conductor or MOS carbon monoxide detectors. The MOS detector uses heated tin oxide. This heated oxide will react when CO is present and an alarm will sound to alert you. Then there are bio-mimetic carbon monoxide detectors which rely on a chemical reaction to the CO that causes an electrical current and an alarm sounds to alert you. Finally there are electrochemical carbon monoxide detectors which also use a chemical reaction similar to bio-mimetic detectors to sound an alarm.

What to Consider When Choosing a Detector

While all tested and approved carbon monoxide detectors are perfect for residential use there are still some elements you need to consider before purchasing one. Certain types of CO detectors can be more sensitive to CO than others. If you want a detector that can react at very low levels then you should purchase one with a memory. Don't get a battery operated detector unless you can check and replace the batteries often. However, a battery operated detector offers more flexible placement options than a plug-in detector.

The Basic Features Of CO Detectors

There is a different type of poisoning that could endanger the lives of every member of the family. Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning claims more than 2,100 American lives each year and is responsible for over 20,000 emergency department visits annually. Because of this, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has recognized CO as the number one cause of deaths due to accidental poisoning in America.

The vast majority of cases of CO poisoning occur in ressidential homes. CO is produced directly from burning fuel or from using any fuel-burning appliances and equipment. Due to the fact that the majority of American homes use fuel everyday, the government recommends that every home with at least one fuel-burning appliance, garage and fireplace should have at least one CO2 detector.

To protect you and your family from CO poisoning, early detection is the key. A CO2 detector is equipped with sensors that can accurately detect CO levels and will warn you even before you will start to exhibit CO poisoning symptoms. Experts recommend purchasing CO2 alarms with electrochemical sensors, which they say are more stable and accurate.

Most CO alarms are also equipped with a voice warning system. Instead of just a loud beep or ‘chirp’, the alarm will send out a voice warning that specifically describes what type of alarm it detects.

Some monoxide alarms that are A/C powered have a battery back-up. A battery back-up allows manufacturers to guarantee that the CO alarm will still work, even druing power cuts. Modern CO2 alarms today have a large backlit LED display that clearly shows CO levels even in dark. This is useful if the alarm sounds in the night, as you will still be able to tell what the reading is.

Some units have ‘Peak-level Memory’ feature which stores and records previous readings of CO levels that are high. A CO2 detector must also have a test/reset button which you could use to test if the unit’s circuitry and alarm system are still functioning properly. Doing this will give you more confidence that the system is functioning properly.

Do you need a carbon monoxide detector if you don't have any gas running to your home?

our house is 100% electric, so my thought is that you do not need a carbon monoxide detector because this poisionous gas comes from malfunctioning gas equipment. we live in Arizona and all the houses around us have no gas lines either, so do we need a co detector?

I would not purchase one if heat was electric.
