'The unvanquished'
Scratching his paws
at all the doors
a pause in case someone has heard
inside the house no-one has stirred.
All hope vanished
the banished
slinks back to his kennel, what's the use?
it's a nose on paws semi-snooze
ears ever alert to a warning
'til six in the morning
He'll be up
taking his steaming cup
scraping the ice and frost
so not all is lost
from the windscreen of the car
leaving the back door ajar
and under cover of the engine running
with all his canine cunning
he's in.
I wish I knew more about where it was entered and what the other poems in the competition/publication might have been like.
It's a decent poem, but nothing earth-shattering. Fairly clever in content, line breaks were well-chosen for the most part, pretty good enjambment (though it would be much better if we had more punctuation to guide us), and good sounds going on (not just the rhymes). However, the sounds are sometimes a bit much (esp. with the rhymes, some of which are extremely close to each other) so it occasionally feels a bit forced. "Scratching his paws/at all the doors" is very good. Not sure if you had end-rhyming requirement or other requirements for this poem, but try relineating certain parts, like "it's a nose on paws/semi-snooze, ears ever alert/to a warning/'til six in the morning. He'll be/up, taking his steaming cup"
Experiment. It's good poem, not great, could be better with some revision. Read it out loud, and be careful about places where there's so much "sound" it's distracting and no longer good. (one such place might be "all hope vanished/the banished/slinks back to his kennel", and the vanished/banished seems forced as well.)
