Tips to Hanging Wall Picture Frames
Now that you have taken the time to select and assemble your picture frame you are ready for the important job of hanging your picture frame on the wall. Hanging a picture frame isn't hard, but there are a few important steps that you should do before you start that will help you save some time. This article will explain the different ways to hang your picture frame and provide tips to help you hang your frame more easily.
Three Different Ways to Hang Your Picture Frame
There are basically three ways to hang your picture frame - screws, nails, or adhesives.
Nails
The most common way to hang photo frames is with finishing nails. Finishing nails are simple to install and won't create a huge hole in your wall like screws. Hammer the nail in at a 45 degree angle and, if possible, into a stud. If youre hanging heavy or large picture frames, its important to put the nail in a stud. Never attempt to hang your picture frame with a nail that's only secured into sheetrock as it won't likely hold and could damage your picture frame. If you don't know how to locate a wall stud, the best way is to use a stud finder (available at any hardware store).
Screws
Anytime you have to hang a picture frame on concrete, stone or brick, you need to use screws as nails will simply fall out. Screws make larger holes so you generally dont use them on a regular sheet rocked wall. In order to secure screws into brick or concrete you will need to pre-drill a hole using a mason drill bit and make the hole smaller than the size of the screw. You can also use a screw anchor to help properly secure the screw in the wall.
Adhesives
The third way to hang picture frames is by using adhesives. They are simple and quick and don't require any holes in the wall. Adhesives, like 3Ms Command Strips, are available in Velcro and hooks and are becoming increasingly more popular. Always read the instructions carefully as the weight limitations and instructions must be closely followed. Hanging small picture frames with adhesives works best, but some adhesives will hold up to 5 pounds. Use with caution because if your picture frame is too heavy the adhesive won't hold and your frame could fall and get badly damaged.
Your next step, after deciding how to hang your wall frame, is to decide where your frame should be hung.
Tips for Hanging Wall Picture Frames
Anytime you're hanging picture frames on the wall, it's always easier if you have someone help with this step. You can have them hold the frame at different positions on the wall so you can find the perfect spot. If youre unsure of what height to hang your frame, it is generally recommended that the picture frame be hung around eye level, or about 3/4 of the way up the wall.
If youre hanging multiple wall picture frames, its best to decide upon the spacing of each frame before you start hanging them on the wall. Hanging multiple picture frames can be challenging so to make your wall arrangement look good, you should arrange the frames on the floor until you like how it looks. For best results, follow these steps:
- Measure the wall area where the picture frames will hang.
- Use a string to outline the measured wall space on the floor.
- Carefully place your picture frames on the floor (protect with a towel or blanket if there is no carpet) and arrange and rearrange them until you are satisfied with how they look.
- Once you have the right placement on the wall for your frame arrangement, begin transfering it to the wall. If at all possible, get someone to help you with this step. If you have an empty wall with nothing hanging there, begin to hang your picture frames by starting in the center of your arrangement and working outwards. If you have other things on the wall and don't have much space, then you should start on one side and work to the other end using the floor arrangement measurements.
- Before placing the nail or screw, check the back of the frame and see where the hanger is placed so you dont make your frame higher or lower than you expect. And, if you have a small level, use it so youre picture frames will always be straight.
Now that you know what hardware is available and have basic steps to follow to hang your picture frames, hopefully it will help you from putting a bunch of unnecessary holes in your wall and make the process a whole lot easier.
decorative things to do with mason jars, that I could give to my sisters (28-30) as gifts for christmas?
I have 5 sisters, and I have 5 (quart sized maybe?) mason jars....like 7 inches high. anyway, I need some spiffy ideas of things I could do to make them decorative? I was going to drill a hole in the bottom and put string lights in them, but we don't have the right drill bit for it. and its kind of difficult to do.
so I need some more ideas!
thanks so much[:
I made candles last year.
