An Overview Of The Distortion Specification Of Wireless Speakers

In this commentary, I am going to highlight the specification "total harmonic distortion", often also titled "THD" which is commonly used in order to show the performance of outdoor wireless speakers.

wireless surround sound speakers are available in all different shapes and sizes. Deciding on the correct model can often be tough. I will shed some light on a frequently used term that is utilized in order to show the technical quality of the loudspeaker: "total harmonic distortion" or "THD". A few of those are most likely pretty simple to comprehend just like "output power" or "frequency response". However, a spec which is not as easily understood is the specification relating to how much distortion the loudspeaker has.

In brief, THD shows the difference between the sound that is produced by the loudspeaker versus the audio signal with which the loudspeaker is driven. The most widespread ways to express distortion are percent as well as decibel. These 2 conventions can be translated into one another. A -20 dB or 10% distortion means that one tenth of the radiated audio is a consequence of distortion whilst -40 dB or 1% would mean that one percent of the energy are harmonic products of the original signal.

A cordless loudspeaker really has numerous elements that contribute to harmonic distortion. One of these is the built-in power amp. This amplifier is driving the speaker element. The audio amplifier itself is going to have a specific amount of distortion. Normally the distortion of the amplifier will be larger the more output power it supplies to the speaker. Normally suppliers are going to show amplifier distortion depending on a specific level of output power, normally a lot less than the rated maximum amp output power.

Having amplifier distortion specifications for several output power levels provides a better picture of the amplifier distortion performance.Furthermore, please note that distortion commonly is measured for a certain test tone frequency. Commonly a 1 kHz sine wave tone is utilized during the measurement. This enables evaluating equipment from different producers. However, distortion generally varies with different frequencies. A lot of digital amplifiers are going to exhibit growing distortion with higher frequency which can not easily be discovered by glancing at the spec sheet.

Distortion is furthermore caused by the speaker driver itself. The majority of loudspeakers use a driver which carries a coil. This voicecoil is positioned in a magnetic field. The coil will track the magnetic field that is controlled by the audio signal in order to move the diaphragm. Yet, this movement is not completely linear. This results in the signal being distorted by the speaker element itself. Moreover, the larger to power level with which the loudspeaker is driven, the larger the distortion. Regularly loudspeaker suppliers are going to display distortion for small to moderate power levels only.

As such both the amp along with the loudspeaker element itself add to distortion. Moreover, there are other factors that also contribute to distortion. The total amount of distortion is the total of all of these factors. The enclosure of the speaker is going to vibrate to some extent depending on the sound pressure level. These vibrations will also be non-linear in nature and contribute to distortion.

In order to find out the total distortion of a loudspeaker, a signal generator is utilized which supplies an ultra-linear signal to the speaker and a measurement microphone that is attached to an audio analyzer to calculate the level of harmonics radiated by the speaker. Intermodulation distortion analysis is one more method which offers a better picture of the loudspeaker distortion performance with real-world signals through utilizing a test signal with 2 harmonics and measuring how many harmonics at other frequencies are generated by the loudspeaker.

An additional factor adding to distortion is the audio transmission of wireless loudspeakers, in particular with products that transmit an analog signal at 900 MHz. Improved products are going to use digital transmission and transmit at 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz to minimize audio distortion.

What is the best way to power car audio subs in doors?

I have two audiobahn 10's in a box for my drum kit. I have a 100 watt home theater amplifier powering them right now, but i would like to give them more power seeing as i overload this amp all the time. And yes i know they make sound systems for this but these subs sounds better than what they make and dont cost nearly as much. what can i do??

Hi,I think this amp would go much harder than what you have at the moment (link at bottom of page). You will get 160 watts per sub. I have never heard or experienced anything but excellent reports from jaycar gear, and it seems this amp can handle 4 ohm loads which is what you need for car subs (just don't wire them in series or you'll have problems). anyway it's not cheap, but if you want something that won't stuff up and deliver I highly recommend something like this. (just be wary of cheaper home theatre amps as they are designed to run 8 ohm loads usually).
