the proximity sensor on my iphone 3g isn't really working..?
as far as i know, on the iphone there's this thing near the ear piece called a "proximity sensor" and it detects whether you are holding the phone to your ear or not. this is what makes the screen go black during a call, when you are holding it to your face, so that it saves battery and your cheek or your ear doesn't accidentally press buttons such as mute or keypad or speakerphone.
however, my proximity sensor must not be working because when i am on a phone call, the screen doesn't go black and random buttons keep getting pressed!
but the proximity sensor seems to work in the Google Application, because when i hold it to my ear, it can sense it and then i speak and it searches what i said.
why is this? what should i do to fix it?

I thought I had the same problem. I normally use my iPhone in a Roots case and don't need to remove it when using it.
When I removed my iPhone from the case the proximity sensor works, when I leave it in the case it does not.
Not sure where the sensor is located or what it tries to detect, but the case seems to be the cause.
