Can somone give me a link to a DVR (digital video recorder) with out going thru Tivo and paying for service?

I want to be able to recorder my own tv show without having to use the traditional VHS tape. I know a lot of things are not digital where the unit uses a HDD to record. The only think I can find are TIVO units, where i have to buy the unit, then pay a month service charge or buy lifetime membership.

I don't want to commit to such a service if I don't know if they'll be around in the next 5 years.

Can anyone point me in the right direction where I can buy a DVR unit which does NOT require you to set up service with a company i.e. TIVO.
